Spare a thought for chickens in this heat

Earlier this week I heard a report on the radio that said that factory farm chickens are raised to gain weight so quickly that their legs cannot support them. The image has haunted me ever since I heard that. Then today, with temperatures around 32°C, the hauntings got worse. How are those poor chickens surviving?

It only took a little internet searching to throw up truly horrific stories about the welfare of factory farm chickens. I added the word ‘hot’ to the search and came across the news that during the heatwave that hit the UK in August 2022, millions of chickens died, many of them crammed into sheds where the temperatures could reach as high as 45°C. The birds were squashed in so close to each other that there was nothing they could do to save themselves.

Today is supposed to be the peak of the current heatwave here. I really hope that our insatiable drive for profit and savings has not resulted in millions more chickens being left to stew.

Surely we can’t carry on eating so much suffering?

It was a hot drive into London today

Today felt warm, and then hot almost as soon as the thin morning cloud lifted. Driving into London in the afternoon felt hotter still, and it was – 31°C on the outskirts, and the air still as the sun. Around Trafalagar Square the pavements were full of shorts and flip-flops, and tourists melting their way around the sights, one or two wobbling into the road like bambis on their Lime Bikes.

It is only now, after midnight, that the temperature feels a properly pleasant 21°C. The moon, dusted orange with Sahara dust, is hanging on its side above the city, and the hot dog cart is still doing business outside the station where our train came in at the end of an evening with friends. From the station we wandered up the street to see the Smithfield Meat Market with its bright lights and white vehicles loading and delivering. Witnessing the traders at their work felt a little like stepping into a slow motion time warp, especially knowing that their move out of the area will happen in the next few years.

Their absence will change this slice of London.

Tom Benyon OBE walks for Zimbabwe … it’s hot

June day at Stonehenge, England

This might give an idea of how hot it is – Stonehenge, England

Today one man and his wife start their walk to raise money for strangers many miles away.

It’s hot and it’s humid in England – the Istanbul side of warm – but that won’t stop them. As the rest of us flop in the shade they are off on their 142 mile walk. The route is from one side of the country to the other, and the aim is to raise money for those upturned by Zimbabwe’s waves of chaos.
