Luigi Vanvitelli (Lodewijk van Wittel, son of Dutch landscape artist Gaspar van Wittel) was born in Naples in 1700 and died in Caserta in 1773 by the project the was overseeing – the construction of the palace he had designed for the King at Caserta. Luigi Vanvitelli (as he was known in Italy) was the father of Carlo Vanvitelli.
